About Rubber Kitty

Rubber Kitty is an independent fashion and art label created by Gaia, built around experimentation, unconventional materials, and pieces that don’t always fit neatly into traditional categories.

The collection moves between clothing, accessories, jewelry, ceramics, and other objects, with many pieces made in small quantities or as one-offs. The work is playful, provocative, and meant to be interpreted by the person wearing it rather than styled only one way.

A big part of Rubber Kitty is taking materials that already have a history and seeing what else they can become.

From inner tube to garment

The rubber pieces begin as used inner tubes.

Before Gaia can turn them into clothing, each tube has to be cleaned and prepared by hand. It’s a process that happens before any cutting, shaping, fitting, or construction can even begin.

Once the material is ready, Gaia works with the rubber’s natural stretch, weight, texture, and imperfections rather than trying to make it behave like conventional fabric. Pieces are cut and constructed by hand, often combined with hardware and other details as the design develops.

The original material still leaves its mark. Subtle variations in texture, surface, and character remain in the finished pieces, which is part of why no two are exactly alike.

Our approach

Rubber Kitty often starts with the material and lets the piece evolve from there.

Salvaged rubber, metal hardware, ceramics, and other unexpected materials become part of the design process rather than simply decoration added at the end. Sometimes the result is wearable in several different ways; sometimes it sits somewhere between clothing, accessory, and object.

There isn’t much interest in making everything fit perfectly into an existing category. The idea is to make pieces with enough personality that the person wearing them can decide what they become.

Most Rubber Kitty pieces are produced in small quantities or individually, so differences between pieces are part of the work rather than something to hide.

Wear it your way

Rubber Kitty pieces can move between everyday styling, nightlife, performance, editorial looks, and more experimental dressing.

A rubber piece might be worn on its own, layered over clothing, styled as a top, or incorporated into an entirely different look. The intention is to leave room for the wearer rather than prescribe one way to use it.
